Last Modified: 19 January 2017

‘‘প্রস্তাবিত বাল্যবিবাহ নিরোধ আইনে ১৮‘র সাথে কোন শর্ত নয়” with the slogan a human chain held at Jaldhaka upazila dated on 18th January, 2017 at 11.00 AM.  USS, LAMB, Dhaka Ahsania Mission, Plan International Bangladesh, ESDO and SKS Foundaiton jointly arranged the human chain program. About 100 participants including youth forum of Jaldhaka upazila attended in the human chian program. All the participants in the human chain protected not to keep special clause in the child marriage law. It is added here that the Government of Bangladesh daftly decided to keep a special clause in the child marriage act that “ if special cases marriage can be arranged in 16 years age of a girl. Civil Society Organizations including youth forums, community has strongly protected not to keep such special clause in the child marriage act because by this clouse parents and the relatives will take the opportunity and they will arrange marriage. Bangladesh has the highest rate of child marriage in Asia and the third highest globally. Child marriage has a disproportionate impact on girl children, as it directly affects their rights to education, health (by causing early pregnancy and child birth complications) and poor developmental outcomes for their infants and protection (it contributes to domestic violence and maternal depression). The main reasons cited for child marriage are poverty, dowry demands for older girls, sexual harassment of young girls and the dropout of girls and boys from schools. Alongside child marriage, many children are left without appropriate care where both parental care and community protection systems are weak and unsupported by effective national systems.
